Pray Pray Pray

Prayer is the biggest need that exists, and it doesn’t cost any money! We would truly appreciate if you would join us in praying for ourselves, Mustard Seed and Japan. Perhaps you can print the following prayers that Jay, the lead pastor of the Osaka church, shared with us when we visited in July of 2012, plus a few we've added since living here over three years. The prayers from our friends and Christian family around the world have made all the difference for us. Thank you!

Prayers for Japan
  1. Japanese people would find hope in Jesus—While the majority of people in Japan have their physical needs met, millions struggle every day with depression, anxiety and overall hopelessness, as demonstrated by Japan being one of the highest number of suicides annually. We know from first hand experience that only Jesus can give hope, peace and joy in this life and the next. We pray that Japanese people will know this hope.

  2. The chance to hear The Truth—It is said that 99% of Japanese people are non-Christian not because they have heard The Truth and rejected it, but because they haven’t yet had the chance to hear it at all. We pray that every Japanese person would miraculously have the opportunity to hear The Gospel and make a decision for Christ.

  3. The church would connect with seekers—With 19 million people in Osaka alone, there are no doubt people who are seeking God and His Truth, but without God’s help it’s seemingly impossible for those few and far between to miraculously locate Mustard Seed Christian Church.

  4. Negative perceptions of Christianity would be done away with—Very little is known about Christianity in Japan, and what is known is often incorrect. Many Japanese people are leery of Christianity because they’ve been told it’s a cult that practices scary and terrible things.

  5. People would be convicted, even if their sin is only known by God—Sometimes in Japanese culture, conviction or shame is only felt if the person’s wrong doing is found out by someone else. Therefore, if the sin is kept secret, conviction is not experienced, and repentance or turning from the sin is not a natural response.

Prayers for the Whelchels
  1. Continued funding—As of June 2018, we are only 75% funded and still in need of 25% of our funding, equaling a shortage of $2,110 per month. While this can be quite a daunting predicament, we have seen the Lord provide for our financial needs again and again, and we trust that He will continue to do so.

  2. Existing relationships—We pray that God will continue to develop our current friendships and acquaintances, and whether they be with non-Christians, new Christians or long-term Christians, that these people would see God’s love and light in us.

  3. New relationships—We are trying to always look for opportunities to engage with new people, hoping to benefit their lives in some way, ideally introducing them to the only One who has brought us hope and peace.

  4. New Church Building—After two years of doing portable church every Sunday in a YMCA, God has provided a new 24/7 rental facility for us. This new space is within walking distance of Osaka train station, the 4th busiest station in the world, where 2.5 million people come through everyday. This building represents a unique and amazing opportunity from God to reach this city with the Gospel. Please join us in thanking God for this building and asking Him to use it to bless this city and further His Kingdom.

  5. Favor with Osaka City—Our church plans to be here a long time, hopefully until Jesus returns, so we want to develop a great rapport with our city and its leaders, showing them that we love this place and these people.
