Mustard Seed’s Mission

To glorify God by making disciples through planting gospel-centered churches in Japan’s unreached cities

Mustard Seed planted a church in Nagoya, Japan in 2009, and they are currently running about 135 people every week. In 2011, Mustard Seed planted a church in Osaka, where we are currently serving. We worship alongside 110 people on Sundays, seeing seekers and first-time visitors every week. Last Christmas we had 600 people attend our 3 Christmas services. Between these two churches, there has been 85 baptisms! Praise God!

This year, Mustard Seed Nagoya and Mustard Seed Osaka is helping plant a third church in Japan—Mustard Seed Kobe. The city of Kobe has over 1.5 million people, nearly all of them in need of hearing about Jesus’ saving grace for the very first time (Kobe population is 0.4% Christian). Mustard Seed Kobe has begun monthly worship services, and they had 60 attendees at their first one! We feel very excited and blessed by what God is doing in and through Mustard Seed Osaka, Kobe and Nagoya.

More Stats on Japan:
  • Less than 1% of Japan’s 127 million people are Christian

  • Japan is the second largest unreached people group

  • There is one church for every 16,701 people in Japan

  • There is only 1 missionary for every 64,244 people and the number of missionaries in Japan has decreased over 30% in the last 20 years

  • 70% of pastors in Japan are over 50-years-old and there are not enough replacements for the next generation
